As a coach, parent or player your training absolutely should consist of preventing or reducing injuries. This free document by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services discuses sports injuries. It defines sports injuries in the broadest sense as those that happen during sports play or exercise. The document further says that some sports injuries happen as a result of accident, bad training, bad equipment, poor conditioning, or poor warm-up and stretching.

The document also defines different types of sports injuries like compartment syndrome, knee injuries, sprains and strains, shin splits, Achilles tendon injuries, Fractures and dislocations. Injuries come in different sizes, shapes and severity. There are acute and chronic injuries. They mention that chronic injuries usually result from overusing a part of the body through exercise or sports over a long period of time. Signs of chronic injury include a dull ache during rest, pain during exercise, swelling. Acute injuries such as a sudden ACL tears or sprained ankles happen suddenly. Some of the signs the document says of an acute injury are swelling, pain, extreme limb weakness, and more.

After an injury it’s important to treat injuries correctly and appropriately. Your role after injury should be to follow good sound advice, like that from a doctor. The injuries document says this is when you should seek or call a medical health professional: If injury causes severe pain, swelling or numbness, you can’t tolerate any weight on the area, the pain or dull ache of an old injury is accompanied by increased swelling or joint abnormality or instability.
